The FCA
Financial markets need to be honest, fair and effective so that consumers get a fair deal. The Financial Conduct Authority is the conduct regulator for 58,000 financial services firms and financial markets in the UK. Most adults in the UK are consumers of financial services. For instance, these include bank accounts, mortgages, credit cards, loans, savings and pensions. The FCA's primary objectives include ensuring an appropriate degree of protection for all consumers.
The FCA are an independent public body. They are funded entirely by the firms that they regulate, by charging them fees. The FCA succeeded the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in 2013. They are accountable to the Treasury, which is responsible for the UK’s financial system, as well as to Parliament. In short, the FCA ensure firms have their customers at the heart of how they do business. They also ensure we give customers appropriate products and services, and put consumer protection above our own profits or income. Because of the FCA, firms have strong incentives to treat consumers properly and strive to win their business on the basis of service, quality, price and innovation.
